Please join us for a special gathering of our community to celebrate the life of Commodore Joe Sweeney on Saturday Morning, October 10, 2010 at the Grandstand on the Schuylkill River National Course (the finish line immediately upriver from the Columbia Bridge on Kelly Drive).
The day would have marked this year's Navy Day Regatta, so it's especially fitting that we'll gather as a community on this morning to celebrate Joe, who was so instrumental in the founding of that special event.
Our celebration will begin at approximately 8:15-8:30 (final time TBD) with a "Calling of the Fleet" immediately before the 9:00 am service (which will last approximately 60-75 min). As is customary, available boats will parade in front of the viewing stands to honor Joe and his gathered family in respect of this great legend of a man and our dear friend.
Because of COVID containment efforts, space is extremely limited (keeping with the City's maximum allowable gathering and our need to collectively keep one another safe through social distancing and spacing).
Accordingly, we ask for your help in doing the following:
- If you're able to attend, please quickly RSVP affirmatively by formally "registering" here. This will essentially provide you with a "ticket." Please RSVP by Monday, Oct 5 at 8 pm.
- If you're NOT able to attend and use the "ticket," please let us know by emailing Bonnie Mueller at [email protected] or the general Schuylkill Navy address of [email protected]
- Do NOT forward this invitation link to others. If you'd like to know if a specific person has been included, email us at the same addresses above ([email protected] or [email protected]). We've worked with the family to create a limited Guest list (but certainly may have missed some).
- Please plan to arrive between 7:30-8:15. Many parking spaces are available in the lot at the Grandstand parking lot. If you're more able, please consider biking or parking at BHR, the East Park Canoe Club, or on Fountain Green to allow those who are less ambulatory to occupy the spaces in the lot. We've timed it earlier in morning to allow for the most availability of spaces.
- Masks will be mandatory, so please bring one...and be prepped to socially distance while sitting in the Grandstand.
- An additional note with final timing will be sent to all those who accept this Invitation next Friday, Oct 9.
